I have been using IPFire for a month now and it seems ok to configure and applying out of the box available firewall filters, downloading configurations from diverse built in resources and applying them.
After a few months using IPFire it turned out to be a lot easier to use and configure compared to other self-hosted firewalls out there.
I must admit I do not use any advanced functionality, focused on three things, be invisible and not having any exposed ports, block most incoming traffic via ICMP or otherwise and separated some IOT devices on my WiFi so they do not have access to internal resources like file shares and such. Not using VPN or vLans yet, nor other things that may or may not be considered advanced things.
By the way, did you read this review about firewalls: https://www.techradar.com/best/best-free-linux-firewalls ?
